Do You Have The Best Strategy?
If you search Google, the various combinations of ecommerce growth strategy give you approximately 300,000 responses. Does the world need one more? Not likely. This business was created because there is an almost universal misunderstanding of the difference between strategy and tactics . The overwhelming majority of offerings are tactical. For example, increasing traffic to your website is a tactic, not a strategy. The thousands of vendors offering these services invariably present them as strategic.
This ignores the elephant in the room, namely, the core strategy of the business, it’s reason for existence, may be poorly defined or non-existant. (Getting rich is a goal, not a strategy). Compounding the problem is the near-universal desire of entrepreneurs to plunge into tactics. Tactics employed in the absence of a comprehensive strategy are simply a spin of the roulette wheel.
Here’s an example* from the world of customer service: many companies pride themselves on keeping customers on hold no more than three minutes and answering every email within twenty four hours. This is not a strategy. A strategy would be getting to the root of the problem that triggered the contact from the customer in the first place. Everything else is tactics.
If you have no strategy, or a flawed strategy, you are depending on luck (roulette) to get you where you are going. This is exactly what gives rise to these comments: “I don’t know how to get the business to the next level”. “I have too many choices”. “The business is not delivering what I hoped it would”. “I’m surrounded by people, but have no one to talk to”. “I’m frustrated. This feels like trying to run in three feet of water”.
